Drag-and-drop shelf apps for Mac
Short answer: macOS has no shelf that floats above your apps, so the built-in answer is the desktop (tidied with Stacks) and the Dock. A shelf app fills the gap. Yoink slides in at the screen edge when you start dragging and Dropover opens a shelf when you shake the pointer. Dropzone adds a Drop Bar beside its file actions. On a MacBook with a notch, NotchNook, boring.notch, Atoll, NotchDrop and Ledge let you drop files on the notch and drag them out later. Droppy holds them at the top of the screen.
What macOS gives you
- The desktop, with Stacks. Drop files on the desktop and come back for them. To keep it from filling up, click the desktop and choose View > Use Stacks (or press Control-Command-0); files gather into stacks by kind, date or tag. The catch is that the desktop is usually behind your windows.
- The Dock. Drag a file over an app's icon in the Dock to open it in that app. A folder you drag to the right side of the Dock can be shown as a stack, which works as a fixed parking spot.
- The screenshot thumbnail. After a screenshot, macOS shows a thumbnail in the corner of the screen. Apple's guide says you can drag that thumbnail and drop it in another location, such as another app. Shift-Command-5 > Options changes where screenshots are saved.
- Spring-loading. Hold a dragged item over a folder and the folder opens, so you can go several levels deep without letting go. The delay is under System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control. Hold Option while you drag to copy rather than move.

Alcove has no file shelf yet. Its changelog calls 1.7.3 the update before "the upcoming 1.8 tray update". The latest version listed there is 1.7.9 from June 2026.
How Ledge's shelf works
Drag files onto the notch. It shows a dashed outline while a drag is over it and takes the drop even when closed. The shelf remembers where each file is rather than copying it, so it uses no extra disk space. If you move or delete the original, it leaves the shelf. A file on a drive you ejected keeps its place.
Files you drop stay until you remove one (hover a tile for its ×) or press Clear. They also survive a restart. The shelf holds 12 items; a thirteenth pushes out the oldest. Clicking a tile shows the file in Finder. Dragging a tile out hands the receiving app the real file.
New screenshots arrive on their own, found through Spotlight wherever macOS saves them. They leave the shelf after a day while the file stays where macOS put it. The switch is "Save screenshots to the Shelf" in Settings, on by default. What the shelf does not have: AirDrop, Quick Look, upload links or file actions, which Dropover, Dropzone, NotchNook and boring.notch offer in various mixes. Ledge also draws only on the built-in display of a notched MacBook (14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro from 2021, MacBook Air from 2022) on macOS 26 or later, so it does nothing on an external monitor.
Which to choose
- A shelf that shows up whenever you drag, on almost any Mac: Yoink, back to macOS 10.13.
- Screenshots collected for you: Dropover, or Ledge on a notched MacBook with macOS 26.
- Doing something with the files (upload, share, convert): Dropzone or Dropover.
- The notch, on any display: NotchNook or Droppy, which both also run on Macs without a notch.
- Free, in the notch: boring.notch or Atoll for a full notch app, NotchDrop for only a file shelf, or Ledge on macOS 26.
- No app: Stacks on the desktop and the screenshot thumbnail cover the occasional drag.
FAQ
Does macOS have a built-in shelf for dragging files?
Not one that floats above your apps. The closest built-in options are the desktop (kept tidy with Stacks) and the Dock, where dragging a file onto an app's icon opens it in that app. You can also drag the screenshot thumbnail straight into another app.
Is there a free drag-and-drop shelf app for Mac?
Yes. On a notched MacBook, boring.notch, Atoll and NotchDrop are free and keep files in the notch, as does Ledge on macOS 26. Dropover is a free download with a US$7.99 Pro upgrade.
Can new screenshots go straight to a shelf?
Dropover can collect new screenshots automatically. Ledge puts each new screenshot on its notch shelf for a day. Without an app, drag the thumbnail that macOS shows in the corner of the screen into the app you want.
Can I drop files on the MacBook notch?
With an app. NotchNook, boring.notch, Atoll, NotchDrop and Ledge keep files you drop on the notch. Droppy keeps files you drag to the top of the screen. Dropover opens one of its shelves when you drop files on the notch.
